Stewardship
Sustainable beauty for a lifetime
At Mullican Flooring, we ensure that the exceptional quality of our products is matched by the quality of our stewardship of natural, renewable resources. We work with national and local organizations to develop best management
practices for each unique piece of land that our lumber comes from, promoting soil conservation, water conservation, wildlife conservation, and other environmental goals. Every step of our process, from forest to floor, meets
the highest standards for sustainability and ethical responsibility.
We are committed to a circular economy: eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products that can be refinished and refreshed over their lifetime, and regenerating our natural resources to meet carbon neutrality. No part of
a harvested tree goes to waste in our facilities: tree bark is processed into mulch, wood chips are used for heating fuel, sawdust becomes particle board, and wood blocks are made into charcoal. Our hardwood floors will last a
lifetime and are made of a carbon-capturing, naturally biodegradable material. We actively work to protect the renewable resources and beauty of Appalachian forests for future generations.
procurement a trailblazer in forest stewardship
We were the first American hardwood flooring manufacturer to produce a Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified solid domestic floor, and we have since brought over 30 FSC®
certified products to the market. The FSC® is the world’s oldest and most recognizable organization devoted to environmentally friendly forestry. The
FSC® label indicates that all timber was harvested in a way that enhances the long-term social and economic well-being of forest workers and
local communities, respects indigenous peoples’ land rights, safeguards the ecological integrity of the forest, and protects forests with environmental and social significance.
We also collaborated with the National Hardwood Flooring Association (NWFA) to create the
Responsible Procurement Program (RPP), safeguarding trees in conservation forests and certifying that hardwood growth exceeds loss and removal from our forests at the
state level. In the Appalachian forests where our lumber comes from, there are 2.45 new trees growing for every tree that dies or is harvested. Our products proudly carry the “U.S. Renewing Forests” label to communicate that we
are committed to renewing our precious natural resources.
standardSnaTural flooring for a healthy home
All our prefinished products meet the highest standards for the health and safety of your home. Both our
solid and engineered prefinished
products have been FloorScore® certified, the most recognized indoor air quality certification standard for hard surface flooring materials. Our engineered and solid
products are also California Air Resource Board (CARB) compliant, which guarantees that we are an
ultra-low-emitting formaldehyde resin (ULEF) manufacturer of composite wood products.
Hardwood flooring is a natural material with a variety of health benefits. Unlike carpet, hardwood flooring does not trap dust, pet dander, and other allergens which can cause discomfort in your home. Our moisture-resistant,
aluminum oxide finishes make it easy to clean up any spills or messes. Unlike some uncertified flooring alternatives, you can be assured that our hardwood flooring does not contain any toxic chemicals that might be harmful to
children or small pets. Breathe easy, knowing that your family will stay safe and healthy while enjoying a beautiful, natural product that will last a lifetime.
legacypreServing appalachian forests
All our prefinished domestic products have earned the
Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable logo, which represents that an average of 2.45
new trees are growing for every one that dies or is harvested in the Appalachian Mountains, as shown by inventory data released by the U.S. Forest Service in 2018. Notably, Mullican Flooring was the industry’s first domestic
hardwood producer to promote Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc. (AHMI) verified sustainable Appalachian timber.
In addition to protecting Appalachian forests, Mullican Flooring is committed to supporting Appalachian communities, creating jobs at our plants in Johnson City, TN, Norton, VA, Ronceverte, WV, and Holland, NY, and relying on
local sawmills across the Appalachian region to provide our lumber. We work to make the Appalachian region a better place, and we want everyone to be able to enjoy its natural beauty, both now and for the future.
